| Jul 12, 2006 - Ancient Rome
| We did the Ancient Rome section today.
It was, like everything, unbelievable.
We started at the Rome Opera house (I know, not so ancient), after getting lost and finding a beautiful church instead.
Michelle was almost in tears from dissapointment at the opera house, which probably would have fit in as a Sydney Uni admin building more than an opera house.
But we moved on and it was forgotten by the time we arrived at the Piazza Venezia. In the Piazza is one of the Greatest building I've ever seen. It is only a couple of hundred years old, but it is just massive, and so majestic. It looks like the palaces you seen in movies like Gladiator. I'll put photos in, its called the Vittorio Emmanuel Museum.
After this we moved along to the Colosseum. Along the way we saw Trajan's Forum, and Trajan's Column, Aswell as Trajans Markets, the worlds first multilevel shopping centre. Then Moved along to See Augustus' and Caeser's forums. The history throughout this section is just unthinkable, especially when your walking past these sights up to the Colosseum imagining your walking through the streets 2000 years ago. The Colosseum was amazing too. We went on a guided tour to skip the line (Only cost 3.50 and i got discounted more than that for having a Perth License and being under 24). The tour was good but packed, and the guides english combined with the walkie talkie system made a bit hard to hear well, but we got to interrogate him afterwards so it was ok.
Its pretty cool to be looking at, and walking around the Colosseum where ancient Romans used to kill slaves, animals and PoW's. They had even 1/4 completed a wodden floor across the ground so it was easier to imagine what it was like back in the day.
After the Colosseum we walked up Palatine Hill, where the rich Romans lived, aswell as the settlement of Romulus, The founder of Rome in the 8th century BC. Then headed down through the Roman Forum among the Temples of Vestal Virgins and Saturn too, walking under the Archs of Titus and Severus Septimus. There will be hundreds of photos when we get it sorted, dont worry.
This was an amazing finale for our final day in Rome. |
