Jul 16, 2006 - Veni Vedi Venice
Well Venice has been really nice.

Yesterday we just walked all around the city and caught the ferry along the canals too (Gondolas cost €100 for half hour).

We saw the tourist sights, ie St Marks church and the Rialto Bridge, which were really cool, but just had a great time walking the backstreets and along the little canals.

Last night was, coincidentally, Venice's biggest celebration of the year, called the Festival of the Redeemer, celebrating the release of Venice from the plague in about 1518 or something like that. Anyway they say they have a 30min fireworks show over the water so we thought we'd check it out.

It was unbelievable! There was literally boats crammed together in the port as far as the eye could see, i think i could have walked from on side to the other over all of them.

Then the fireworks came on at 11:30 and literally went till 12:15. 45mins of the best fireworks i've ever seen. Time to send Clover-Moore a letter.

Getting home was a bit rough walking for 45mins in tiny backstreets with tens of thousands of people doing the same thing, but once we got to the bus stop it was ok.

(Venice is actually an island which has no cars allowed, walking only. We stayed on the mainland, a 10min busride to the edge of the island)

Today we just chilled out in town leaving our bags at the staion and enjoying the morning, and early arvo before the train to Vienna
