Jul 19, 2006 - Mozart House
Today we went to the Old part of town or the Ald Stadt. We caught the tram around the ring road to Karlsplatz to see the Staatsoper or the Austrian State Opera House. It certainly looked a lot more impressive than the one in Rome so that was a good start. There were no concerts advertised though and the tour had gone up to 6.5 euros instead of 4 so we ditched that idea and got some photos from the outside. Vowing that one day we'd come back during opera season when the spanish riding school and the vienna boys choir would be back from holidays as well.

We wandered down the main road towards Stephensplatz following the "music mile" which is a trail of little commemorative plaques dedicated to famous composers who contributed to the musical heritage of Vienna at some point. We wandered down to Spephensplatz which gets its name from the massive medieval cathedral that stands there called Stephensdom. Our camera decided to pack it in at this point so we went inside and had a look around and then bought a cheap disposable before heading for Figarohaus or Mozart House as it has recently been renamed.

This place was absolutely amazing, however a little more expensive as the museum had recently been extended and so had the price. But that aside it was quite inspirational to wander around the former home of a musical genius like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This is the house where he wrote the opera, The Marriage of Figaro and I was also ecstatic to get some pictures of the original handwritten manuscripts of The Requiem and the part they had was my favourite part of the work, The Dies Irae. If you're not familiar with Mozart's Requiem, its the opening soundtrack for the second Xmen movie when they"re trying to get night crawler. They also sang it at Princess Diannas funeral.

Its an amazing piece of music and the museum here was really cool. Even Trent thinks he's a Mozart buff now!
