From Mendooran to Nashville
In June 2006, Michelle Little, who grew up in the sleepy little town of Mendooran NSW, will be making her way to Nashville, Tennessee USA to perform her own songs on the very stages where so many great country music performers have done.
Michelle grew up in Mendooran, 75km north of Dubbo in the central west of NSW. In 1998 she moved to Dubbo and attended the original Dubbo High School and became heavily involved in the country music association. From the age of 8 years old Michelle performed throughout NSW, ACT, QLD and New Zealand with guest appearances at many country music festivals and concerts including support act for Adam Brand and Lee Kernaghan. In 1999, Michelle released her debut EP titled “That’s What I like”. The CD received national airplay on country music radio.
In 2001 Michelle attended the Australian College of Country Music and was a finalist in the prestigious Toyota Star Maker Award at the Tamworth country music festival. In the same year she also moved to Sydney to begin her studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. During her time studying, Michelle continued to perform at various festivals and venues across NSW.
Since moving to Sydney, Michelle has realised the importance of song writing in the Australian music industry. As well as performing the standard club-lounge and hotel gigs where the repertoire is mostly covers, Michelle regularly performs at acoustic nights around Sydney where she is able to perform her own original material.
Michelle recently graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Music Education) and although she has been teaching for well over a year, she is still as keen as ever to fulfil her dreams of being a singer and performer. That is why about 2 months ago Michelle contacted three well-known clubs in Nashville about their open mic nights.
After providing them with information on her singing career thus far, she was pleasantly surprised to hear back. At first it was Debi Champion from the Commodore Sports Club that replied with an invitation to perform on one of the “songwriters in the round” nights that she hosts at the club. Debi explained that the open mic nights are normally used as an audition but having read through the information and visited Michelle’s website, she was happy to book her for a spot the week leading up to Fanfare – America’s major Country Music Festival. After this it wasn’t long before Michelle heard back from Jack Scott at the French Quarter Café who offered Michelle a similar spot on the songwriter’s night that he hosts. Then about a week ago Michelle heard back from the Bluebird Café where many songwriters such as Garth Brooks and many others started out.
“As you can imagine, I am very excited about these performances. Sure, in the scheme of things they are merely a foot in the door, but for a girl that grew up singing on the backyard swing-set in Mendooran, it is like a dream coming true!”
Michelle will also be travelling to Brazil, Mexico, New York, London and Europe from May until August this year and is looking forward to the song writing that the trip will inspire when she returns to Sydney.
Michelle’s performances in Nashville are:
Thursday, 8th June, 7pm – The Commodore Sports Bar, Holiday Inn, Nashville USA
Friday, 9th June, 6pm – The French Quarter Cafe, Nashville USA
Monday, 12th June, 6:30pm – The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville USA
